Here is the difference between the fictional Don Quixote and Arizona U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly.

OK, here is one of the differences.

In the novel by Miguel de Cervantes, the hero Don Quixote wishes to restore honor and chivalry to the world, eventually coming to the fantastical belief that windmills are giants “with long arms” that he must fight.

In the real (or is it unreal?) world where Sen. Kelly exists — Washington, D.C. — the windmill he has chosen to tilt at really IS a giant.

With long arms.

Mark Kelly wants to ban super PACs

And while it appears the senator may have no better chance at defeating his monster than Don Quixote had at slaying an imaginary one, Kelly charges ahead with his lance.

Which, in this case, is legislation that he and Georgia Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff have introduced (again) that would prohibit for-profit corporations from influencing political campaigns and federal elections.

The Goliaths that Kelly and Ossoff would eradicate are super PACs, shadowy nonprofits through which anonymous donors pour millions and millions and more millions of “dark money” into election campaigns.

Judge foils effort: To keep 'dark money' in the dark

All of it since the disastrous 2010 Citizens United decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that welcomed corporate cash into our political system

In a statement Kelly said, “On issues from tackling climate change to reducing costs for working families, we’ve seen that big corporations have too much sway on what happens in Washington. Senator Ossoff and I understand that representatives need to be accountable to their constituents, not big corporations. Our bill will end the influence corporate PACs have on our political system and make Washington work better for Arizonans.”

The reason Kelly's bills won't pass

The bill won’t pass.

It should, but it won’t. SOBs on both sides of the aisle enjoy having monsters in their corner, foolishly believing their colossus is bigger and badder they the other guy’s colossus, and too greedy and dumb to recognize that the giants always come out on top, not the politicians.

And certainly not the people.

Kelly and Ossoff also regularly introduce legislation that would ban members of Congress from buying and selling stock while in office, since they have access to all kinds of insider information. That bill would require Washington politicians to put their stock portfolios in blind trusts, as Kelly and Ossoff do.

It never passes, either.

The windmills Kelly is tilting at have everything to do with that.
