GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — Senate Bill 100 could soon prohibit commercial vehicles, including semi-trucks, from driving in the left lane on Interstate 70 between Morrison and Glenwood Springs.

Sen. Dylan Roberts, a Frisco Democrat told the Colorado Sun why he supports the bill, “A lot of the wrecks we’ve seen over the last few winters have been a direct result of semis speeding in the left lane trying to pass other cars,” said Roberts. “That’s a completely avoidable accident.”

The only exception would be to pass a car traveling below the posted speed limit, but that can happen frequently when traveling through the Colorado mountains.

Colorado truckers worry the bill doesn’t accomplish what it’s designed to do. They fear restricting truckers from the left lane could cause drivers who regularly drive back and forth between Denver and the Western Slope.

Other bill regulations include increased speed enforcement through Glenwood Canyon and expanded chain requirements.

Greg Fulton with the Colorado Motor Carriers Association told the Sun, “We need to have a greater level of study or analysis on this before taking that action.”

The bill was assigned to the Senate Transportation and Energy Committee, but the first hearing has yet to be scheduled.
