Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says he will “proudly support” the bill reforming the Electoral Count Act.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, confirmed he would support the updates to the Electoral Count Act of 1887. Just a few hours after this statement, the Senate Rules Committee approved to move the bill to the Senate floor. The only Senator to not approve the bill moving to the Senate floor was Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas. The updates were introduced to limit the Vice President’s role in counting votes. This bill is in response to the January 6th insurrection and former President Donald Trump calling on former Vice President Mike Pence to not validate the rightfully won election of President Biden.

MCCONNELL: “This afternoon, those of us on the rules committee will markup a bipartisan package of updates to the Electoral Count Act of 1887. We strongly support the modest changes that our colleagues in the working group have fleshed out after literally months of detailed discussions. I'll proudly support the legislation provided that nothing more than technical changes are made to its current form.”
