Seneca Falls announces first property reappraisal since 2015

SENECA FALLS, NY - The town of Seneca Falls is set to undergo a property reappraisal, the first one since 2015.

The reappraisal will help determine the fair market value of a property for tax calculation purposes, taking into account recent sale prices of similar properties or any improvements or alterations made. The current assessment rate for the town stands at 77 percent, but it is set to drop to 62 percent on March 1, in line with recent home sales in the region.

The main objective of the reappraisal is to make the property market more equitable for everyone, according to Deborah VonWald, the assessor for the town of Seneca Falls. The Tonawanda firm of Emminger, Newton, Pigeon & Magyar will handle the reappraisal process.

An informational session will be held at the community center at 35 Water St. on Feb. 28 at 6:30 p.m., according to Joseph Emminger, the president of the firm.

Property owners will be sent notices with the new assessment rate in the first week of March. Residents who wish to contest the new rate will have several opportunities to do so.

If a property owner has questions but cannot attend the meeting, they can call the project hotline at 315-812-1800 or town assessor Deborah VonWald at 315-568-9700.
