Seneca Park Zoo announces death of Canada lynx

A male Canada lynx named Gretzky died at Seneca Park Zoo over the weekend.

The zoo announced the death Jan. 4 on social media, saying it followed his “sudden and rapid decline (on Dec. 30) with severe neurological changes, causing him to be unaware of his surroundings.”

Gretzky was anesthetized so an examination and lab work could be performed, which revealed a disease within his brain.

Based on the diagnosis and severity of his symptoms, veterinary staff determined recovery was not possible, and he was euthanized.

A necropsy confirmed that Gretzky had a brain tumor, the zoo said.

Gretzky was one of two Canada lynx in the zoo’s care. He was 11 years old and came to Seneca Park Zoo from Yukon Wildlife Preserve in 2013.

Seneca Park Zoo's other Canada lynx is female Bianca, who was born in 2013 and arrived here in 2014.

Together they had one kitten, Stanley, on June 2, 2022.

Late last year, Stanley was transferred to Trevor Zoo in Millbrook, New York, as part of an Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan.
