Senegal boat capsizes, spilling diesel fuel in sea

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) -- A boat that capsized off the coast of Senegal's capital is now leaking diesel fuel into the ocean near a scenic island.

Senegalese Environment Minister Haidar El Ali said Monday the accident took place later Friday near Madeleine Island, about a 15-minute ride by wooden boat from Dakar.

The minister said authorities were trying to do all that they can to contain the spill near the island, whose waters are home to a diverse array of fish.

The boat was carrying some 45,000 liters (nearly 12,000 gallons) of diesel fuel. Crews are trying to get the boat out of the area though initially they had been hampered by high winds.

Senegalese authorities said the boat had a fishing license from neighboring Mauritania and an investigation will be conducted.
