Senior Day at the Great Lakes Mall returns May 17

May 10—After a three-year hiatus, Senior Day is returning to the Great Lakes Mall.

Partner members of the Senior Services Levy Committee recently announced that the event in Mentor will take place May 17, with the Cleveland Clinic as a presenting sponsor.

Main sponsors include the Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging and Mentor Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center.

In celebration of Older Americans Month, the national May observance marking its 60th anniversary, Lake County seniors are invited to attend for a "special day of activities, annual awards and great fellowship."

Officials confirmed that $1 tickets are now available at any of the Lake County senior centers or the door on the day of the event.

Guests will be welcomed beginning at 8:30 a.m. with light refreshments and coffee, followed by bingo at 9:30 a.m.

Dozens of sponsors and vendors will be on hand throughout the day to offer educational information and material on services available for seniors and their caregivers. Demonstrations throughout the day will include chair volleyball, reiki, paint pouring and balance class.

Additionally, the Lake County commissioners will present the "Outstanding Senior Citizen Awards" at 11:30 a.m.

The program will be emceed by Lake County Council on Aging CEO Joe Tomsick.

Individuals being honored during the ceremony are:

—Paula Iseman — Eastlake Senior Center

—Lois "Dusty" Staudt — Fairport Harbor Senior Center

In addition to the awards, the Council on Aging will announce the posthumous naming of the Volunteer Center at its East Avenue office for Patty Mackey, who served the agency for nearly three decades as an advocate, board member and volunteer.

"She worked hard to provide benefits for Lake County senior citizens," Tomsick said. "Patty's most proud achievement was her leadership role in bringing a senior services levy to the county in the early 1990s, and to her credit, it has passed every time it has come up for renewal."

After the awards, "Elvis" will entertain for one hour beginning at 12:30 p.m., with a door prize raffle drawing along with other surprises.

"Contact your local senior center, the Council on Aging, or any Senior Services Levy partner for ticket information," Tomsick said. "And thanks to support from the Senior Services Levy, Laketran is offering free transportation to the event."
