Sandbar lecture: Pirates of the Carolinas

The Sandbar Lecture series presents Pirates of the Carolinas with Jim McKee, 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, July 11.

McKee, a life-long student of history, a graduate of Greensboro College and the site manager at Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site, will shed insight into local pirates and their expeditions along our coast.

Over 300 years since the death of Edward Teach (aka Blackbeard), who met his fate on the North Carolina coast, his ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge, ran aground off the Carolina coast (now on the National Register of Historic Places). Towns like Beaufort, Ocracoke, Bath, Greenville and spots all along the Outer Banks are still steeped in tales about this wickedness of pirates.

The Sandbar Lecture will be held at the Museum of Coastal Carolina, 21 E. Second St,, Ocean Isle Beach. The lecture is free with museum admission. Details: 910-579-1016 or www.museumplanetarium.org.
