"The age group is probably 60 to 90 therefore we're not raising children anymore. Some of us are retired and we need new friends and we need activities. And I'm seventy four. I want to be busy every minute."

The Newcomers Club of San Dieguito is open to local women

Some have been riding the surf together for more than 20 years

"I love it. It's good exercise because it's good for your thighs going out, it's good getting up off the ground, it's good fun, and the water is just always rejuvenating. That's why I've been doing this 15 years."

(SOUNDBITE) (English) CHRISTA STAHL, 85-YEAR-OLD BOOGIE BOARDER, SAYING:

" I've been through a lot in 85 years. I've had ups and downs, but find something to do that that makes you forget all that and feel optimistic. I think that's the toughest part."
