Seniors celebrate Christmas with humor and cheer

Dec. 22—A singer moved her audience to form a conga line during a Christmas program for senior citizens.

Homewood Health Campus served a holiday ham lunch that included warm cookies to prime the jolly crowd of about 50 at Boone County Senior Services, Inc. Dec. 20.

Singer Jennifer Johnson, of Cicero, opened with classics such as "Silver Bells," and "Santa Claus is Coming to Town."

But a handful of women jumped out of their seats and formed a conga line when she offered Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree." The dancers snaked their way among the tables of their less adventurous or less mobile peers, drawing laughter and applause.

Johnson invited the group to sing along. She challenged the audience with music trivia questions, the answers to which included Mel Torme, The Carpenters, and Shirley Temple.

And she told snowman jokes but was surprised at the response.

A man in the audience yelled out to her, "What do you call a snowman with a six pack?"

"I don't know," she said.

"The abdominal snowman," he called back to his friends' laughter.

The program was part of the center's lunch and learn series, which take place in Lebanon and Zionsville. Lunch is free, but reservations are required. Call 765-482-5220, or 317-873-8939, or visit https://www.booneseniors.org/services/ for more information.
