Dec. 30—HERMITAGE — There's no harm in a slow start — provided it's offset by a strong finish. So it was for Hickory High girls' basketball team during the 11th annual Sally Ward Basketball Classic.

Emily Duncan drilled 7 of her 9 points to jump-start the Hornets' rally, then McKenzie Gustas garnered 10 of her game-high 19 points during the decisive 4th frame in Hickory's 46-42 win over Sharpsville.

At The Hive Wednesday night host Hickory trailed at the conclusion of each of the first 3 quarters. However the Hornets' senior leadership enabled Hickory to harvest the win.

"The first half, we could've come out stronger — we were kind've slow, me personally, I think. But I knew I had to have higher energy, coming out, knowing my first half wasn't great. So I came out hoping to play harder, and get my team's energy up," explained Duncan, who also snared 7 rebounds and dished out 2 dimes.

On 4 trips down the floor with the game on the line Gustas got Hickory within 37-35 with 5:30 remaining; tied at 37 just 17 seconds later, then she converted 4 consecutive free throws, hoisting Hickory to 4-point leads at the 44.3- and 23.9-second marks.

"Kenzie did great!" Duncan praised. "Kenzie's a very hard player and she knows when to step up. She's always playing her hardest. I think she came out with a lot of energy and carried our team at the end, brought us back in the game. She's a very good player."

"Kenzie did fantastic job attacking and getting to the hoop," praised Hornets' Head Coach Matt Fabian, who also noted Gustas' flawless 7-for-7 free-throw shooting. "She put the team on her back in that fourth quarter, then we were able to get it done on defense and eek out the win.

"Em did a nice job," Fabian continued. "She got open on some looks. She's doing a better job of shot-faking and setting up that mid-range jumper. That's a lost art, the mid-range shot. ... She was knocking down the fifteen- and sixteen-footers all night, and that's a big shot when teams give 'em to you."

During Hickory's 15-7 fourth-quarter rally sophomore sharpshooter Mariah Swanson also swished a crucial 3-point fielder, part of her 8-point, 4-rebound performance.

The Blue Devils' Alli Davis drilled a trio of treys during the 1st frame, staking Sharpsville to a 13-6 lead. Tori Kimpan connected for half of her 8 points during the 2nd stanza and Adyson Kratko and Ericka Grandy garnered triples, offsetting Gustas' 5 points as Sharpsville assumed a 23-20 margin at intermission. Davis divided 10 third-period points with Chasie Fry, and despite Duncan's 7 points Sharpsville still led, 35-31 through 24 minutes.

Fabian employed a zone, and Sharpsville shot just 7 for 23 during the 2nd half.

"Once we were able to get the game back to a one- or two-possession game we were able to go back to it (the zone) and force them to take longer jump shots," Fabian noted. "Then when we got some good defensive rebounds on our end we were able to push the ball and get into transition, get to the basket and draw some fouls."

Hickory (4-4) finished 15 for 42 from the floor (35.7%), but converted 13 of 18 freebies (72.3%). Conversely, Sharpsville shot 16 for 50 from the field (32%), but the Blue Devils got to the line just 6 times, converting 3.

For Sharpsville (2-4) and 1st-year Head Coach Rob Hubbard, Davis dished out a game-high half-dozen assists in addition to her team-high 14 points, and Kimpan collected a game-high 9 caroms, 1 more than Fry. Each distributed 2 assists, also.

Fabian reflected, "I think, for our club, this is a big win that'll hopefully propel us into the new year. We were up-and-down, kind've a roller-coaster during the month of December, though we played some really good teams.

"But this is a good win against a very good team," Fabian continued. "Hopefully, we'll hit our stride here. We have region games next week, then a big showdown with Grove City at our place on January ninth.

"This win was a big mental boost for us going into the new year, 'cause we didn't want to lose two games in-a-row at home. So pulling this out, getting the win, is key. We've just got to start a little faster," Fabian noted.

"We've never won our own tournament here, so it was nice to win against a local team, Sharpsville. We lost to them last year, so it was a good comeback this year," Duncan said. "Our goal this year is to win our region. ... Our team is fairly old enough now to be playing well together, so I think we have a very good chance of winning that."

Notes: Hickory held a 35-33 edge on the glass, and the Hornets had only 11 turnovers — and just 4 after intermission. Similarly Sharpsville made 12 miscues, but only 4 during the 2nd half. ... Malana Beach (3) and Kaelyn Fustos (2) also had multiple assists for Hickory. ... Neshannock notched the preliminary game, 70-44 over Fort LeBoeuf, led by All-Tourney Team standouts Marian Haggerty, Neleh Nogay, and Megan Pallerino.
