September Student of the Month: McAlester's Brooklynn Sumner

Oct. 28—Where do you want to go to college and why?

I plan to attend the University of Oklahoma. The campus is beautiful, and it just feels like the right place for me. I went to a small school for elementary and middle school, so the large campus will have a lot of opportunities for me. They have a great reputation, and two of my favorite teachers went to OU. I aspire to be like them.

What is your list of accomplishments including scholarships received?

National Honor Society (2022-Present), Superintendent's Honor Roll (2021-Present), Placed 1st for English III at Southeastern Oklahoma State University Curriculum Contest (2023), Placed 2nd for U.S. History at Southeastern Oklahoma State University Curriculum Contest (2023), Rotary Club Student of the Week (2023), AP Language and Composition Exam Score of 3, AP US History Exam Score of 3, ACT Composite of 31, Oklahoma Promise — Covers Tuition, University of Oklahoma: Award of Excellence — $20,000, University of Oklahoma: Welcome Home Scholarship — $5,700

What drives you to succeed?

My family drives me to succeed more than anything. They've supported me in everything I've done, and I want nothing more than to make them proud. My friends have also played a large part in helping me succeed. They're always there for me and are so encouraging, and I love them all so much.

Who inspires you to excel in school and why?

My teachers, past and present, have all played a huge role in my success in school. Most notably Ms. Morris, Mr. Prince, and Mr. Calaway have all believed in my abilities and it drives me to work hard. They've helped me believe in my own potential and build my confidence.

What community activities are you involved in and what drives you to give back to the community?

I do a lot of community service with my church, St. Joseph's in Krebs. I've been part of their server program for nearly ten years. I've always enjoyed helping them out. It feels great to be involved and knowing that I'm making a difference.

What are your extracurricular activities and how do they improve your education?

I'm part of the Student Council, where I've served as executive secretary and vice-president. I'm also part of the Academic Team as team captain. In addition, I'm part of the Prom Committee and Art Club. These organizations have helped me feel involved and gave me the opportunity to give back to my school, and I'm able to make friends. Without these friends, I wouldn't have part of my support system to get me through school.

How would a new car help achieve your future goals?

Although I have a car right now, it is older. It has gotten me through my senior year so far, but my family have expressed their worries about it not getting me to college. College has been one of my aspirations since I was in middle school, and I would greatly appreciate a new car to safely get me through my education without my family having to worry about my car breaking down and being too far away to help me.
