Serbia Arrests the Last Alleged War Criminal From the 90s
Serbia has arrested Goran Hadzic, the last major war criminal of the 1990s Yugoslav wars, Reuters' Adam Tanner and Aleksandar Vasovic report, thanks to a clue offered by an Italian artist. The Hague has indicted Hadzic for crimes against humanity for killing and deporting thousands of "Croats and other non-Serbs" from the region of Croatia he controlled in the 1991-1995 conflict.
The "big breakthrough" came when Hadzic tried to sell "a stolen Modigliani painting as he was running out of money," Serbian officials say. Serbian police arrested former Serb army chief Ratko Mladic in May; the European Union demanded the arrest for Serbia to progress toward membership in the European Union. After Mladic, Hazdic was the last major war criminal that had not been brought to justice.
Found living near the village where he was born, Hadzic did not resist arrest. He was carrying fake documents, and his appearance had changed greatly, but mostly due to age. Here's Hadzic in 1993:
