Serbia's Top Government Officials Attend Funeral for Head of Serbian Orthodox Church

Top Serbian government officials attended the funeral liturgy for Patriarch Irinej, the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church, on Sunday, November 22, at the Church of St Sava in Belgrade.

Several high-ranking officials including Serbian President Aleksander Vucic, Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic, and the Serb member of the Bosnia-Herzegovina presidency Milorad Dodik attended the ceremony.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFERL) said some members of the public in attendance did not wear masks and failed to practice social distancing during the funeral despite the Church of St Sava’s warnings to abide to COVID-19 measures.

Irinej had tested positive after presiding over a funeral service for the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church’s arm in Montenegro, RFERL reported. The chief cleric died at age 90 on Friday after battling the coronavirus for two days. Credit: Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty via Storyful
