Serena and Venus Williams enter US Open doubles draw 1 last time for Serena's final tournament

If the US Open is going to be Serena Williams' final tournament, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion is getting her money's worth.

Serena and her older sister Venus have accepted a wild card to participate in the US Open women's doubles event together, the tournament announced on Saturday.

The two sisters have not played doubles at the US Open since 2014 and haven't entered a Grand Slam together at all since the 2018 French Open.

Together, the two are among the best doubles pairs in the history of the sport, having won 14 Grand Slam titles (with a career Grand Slam two times over) and three Olympic gold medals. Their first US Open title came in 1999, the same tournament Serena won her first Grand Slam singles title.

They remain undefeated in Grand Slam finals, and could end up putting that status to the test one more time in New York City.

Serena Williams still plans to retire after US Open

Running it back one more time is undoubtedly a treat for fans who will be saying goodbye to one of the greatest players in the history of tennis.

Via an essay in Vogue, Serena announced earlier this month she plans to retire after the US Open, ending a professional career that has spanned 27 years. Serena's 39 total Grand Slam titles (23 singles, 14 doubles, two mixed doubles) are tied with Billie Jean King for third-most all time, behind only Margaret Court (64) and Martina Navratilova (59).

Even before the tournament begins, the tears have already started flowing.

The US Open doubles draw is scheduled to begin Wednesday. Before that, Serena is slated to open her singles run against Danka Kovinic on Monday, while Venus will face Alison Van Uytvanck on Tuesday.
