From Oprah Magazine

The world was rapt Sunday evening during Oprah's two-hour interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, as the couple revealed the truth of why they decided to step back from their roles within the royal family.

Meghan spoke at length about the difficulties she faced since marrying into the family in May 2018, including the U.K. tabloids' incessant and racist coverage of her. She also spoke about the lack of support she received from the institution, saying she was not given resources to deal with her mental health struggles and that the family refused security for her son, Archie.

Just hours after the interview, Meghan's longtime friend and tennis champion Serena Williams posted an Instagram showing her support. Williams wrote that she too knows “first hand the sexism and racism institutions and the media use to vilify women and people of color.” Williams, who's considered one of the greatest athletes of all time, has faced years of sexist and racist attacks in the media and on the court.

In the Instagram about Meghan, Williams wrote:

Meghan Markle, my selfless friend, lives her life - and leads by example - with empathy and compassion. She teaches me every day what it means to be truly noble. Her words illustrate the pain and cruelty she's experienced.

I know first hand the sexism and racism institutions and the media use to vilify women and people of color to minimize us, to break us down and demonize us. We must recognize our obligation to decry malicious, unfounded gossip and tabloid journalism. The mental health consequences of systemic oppression and victimization are devastating, isolating and all too often lethal.

I want Meghan's daughter, my daughter and your daughter to live in a society that is driven by respect.

Keep in your memory the fruitage of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.

In the caption of the post, Williams said: “I am so proud of you for being so brave. I know it is never easy. You are strong- both you and Harry. I love you. I adore you. Your friend S.”
