Sergeant Travis Griffith has announced his bid for chief of police in San Angelo Thursday for the May 2024 municipal election.

Griffith is hoping to replace current Chief Frank Carter who has announced he is not seeking reelection.

"I never in a 100 years thought I would be running for office, a politician," Griffith said during his announcement at the Tom Green County Courthouse.

Griffith joined the San Angelo Police Department on December 31, 2008.

"Travis Griffith is a dedicated law enforcement professional who is deeply committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community," a news release from his campaign stated. "With his extensive experience, strong leadership skills, and clear vision, he is the ideal candidate for the role of Chief of Police."

Griffith said he is eager to serve as police chief.

"I believe in this community whole heartedly, together we can foster an environment where everyone feels safe," he said. "Purpose is big for me, my purpose is to serve."

Griffith said his faith is the reason he is where he is at today, during his speech.

"I'm a believer. Throughout my life, my faith in Jesus Christ has been the driving force in shaping my character," he said. "It instilled in me a deep sense of integrity and humility, and it's the foundational aspect of who I am. Those same aspects will be used moving forward as the police chief of San Angelo."

Lieutenant Mike Hernandez also announced his bid for police chief on Saturday, November 11, at City Hall just prior to the Veteran's Day Parade.
