Sergei Bobrovsky and strong defense lead Florida Panthers to shutout win over Red Wings

Sergei Bobrovsky recorded his first shutout of the season to lead the Florida Panthers to a 2-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday at Little Caesars Arena.

The Panthers improve to 5-3-1 on the season and have picked up points in each of their past four games. The Red Wings fall to 6-4-1.

Florida has won each of its past 10 games against the Red Wings dating back to the 2020-21 season.

Bobrovsky, playing in his 650th career NHL game, stopped all 22 shots he faced to keep a Red Wings team averaging four goals a game entering Thursday off the scoresheet.

Overall, Detroit went 0 for 5 on the power play and had just seven shots on goal with the man advantage despite entering the game with the fourth-best power play success in the NHL (32.4 percent) and the Panthers having a 67.9-percent penalty kill rate that was the worst in the league.

The shutout is the 39th of Bobrovsky’s career and sixth with the Panthers.

Bobrovsky entered Thursday with a career 24-6-1 record and .937 save percentage against the Red Wings. This includes an 11-1-0 record during his Panthers tenure.

His four shutouts against the Red Wings are the most against any opponent in his NHL career.

Steven Lorentz opened scoring with 51.1 seconds left in the second period, firing a shot from the left circle that bounced off the crossbar and then Detroit goaltender James Reimer’s back before trickling into the net. It was Lorentz’s first goal as a Panther after being acquired this offseason in the Anthony Duclair trade with the San Jose Sharks.

Anton Lundell added an empty-net goal with 1:12 left to play.
