The killer of Milly Dowler, Levi Bellfield, tried to kill himself in prison, according to reports.

Bellfield, who was imprisoned for three murders including that of schoolgirl Miss Dowler, was “minutes from death” when prison staff found him on Friday evening.

The 51-year-old former nightclub bouncer is now under 24-hour watch at top security Frankland Prison in County Durham, according to the Sun on Sunday newspaper.

It is believed that he was found badly hurt in his prison cell but did not require hospital treatment.

“He was minutes from death - if the prison officers hadn’t been on hand so swiftly, he would have died,” a source told the Sun on Sunday.

Bellfield murdered 13-year-old Milly in 2002 after abducting her in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey.

He also killed Marsha McDonnell 19, and Amelie Delagrange, 22 with a hammer and was found guilty on 25 February 2008 and sentenced to life imprisonment.

The Ministry of Justice were approached for comment.
