Series of tweets from Howell woman draws investigation from sheriff's department

The Livingston County Sheriff's Office is investigating a Howell woman for a series of tweets she sent out earlier this week.

Kasey Helton's tweets pertain to comments made by members of the public concerning mask mandates during school district and governmental meetings.

The investigation began after the posts were brought to the sheriff's department's attention, Livingston County Sheriff Michael Murphy said.

No charged have been filed. Helton declined to comment.

"Somebody is going to have to say 'Here is the line' on what falls under free speech and what crosses that line," Murphy said.

He called the posts "borderline" and said the decision was up to prosecutors.

The investigation has been forwarded to the Livingston County Prosecutor's Office for review.

A message left with the prosecutor's office seeking comment was not returned.
