Series of vehicle break-ins under investigation in Montgomery County

Police are investigating a series of vehicle break-ins that happened overnight in two local cities.

The Kettering Police Department said in a social media post that if you live in the neighborhoods off Swigert Road, just off Wilmington Pike, you should check your vehicles for damage.

“There was a series of vehicle break-ins overnight, which has already resulted in reports on Coker, Bonnie, and Burchdale thus far,” the police department said.

If you live in this area, the police department is asking you to check your surveillance cameras.

“Any footage of potential suspects will help us in identifying who did this,” the police department said.

According to the police department, the break-ins happened possibly around 3:45 a.m. and before 6 a.m.

A spokesperson for the Centerville Police Department confirmed they also received reports of vehicle break-ins overnight. There were six reports of cars being broken into at the Cornerstone North Apartments.

As reported on News Center 7 at 5:00, police said the thieves weren’t just looking for unlocked cars, they were going to do whatever it took to get into the one they wanted.

Kettering Public Information Officer Cynthia James said one tip to not be the next victim is to park your car in your driveway or garage, as the cars parked on the street make it easier for thieves to pull up next to your car and steal what they can.

“It sounds like they’re less likely to go up into someone’s property on their driveway than they are to just hit the cars that are on the streets,” James said.

This is what happened to Don Davison, who had his truck parked on the street out front of his apartment last night when the thieves came through.

“They took what they could see,” Davison said.

When Davison woke up, he noticed a Kettering police officer outside of his apartment on Burchdale Avenue.

“He knocked on the door and said ‘I got some bad news,’” Davison said.

His new truck was broken into.

“They got my tools, broke out my window, made a mess,” he said.

James said they do not have a description of the thieves or know how many of them there were.

“It sounds like these guys were in a car, which would make sense if they made it to Centerville after,” James said.

James said having cameras pointing away from your home could help in situations like this wehre the camera would be able to pick up a description of the car such as make, model and license plate number, which would help police track down the suspects
