One dead in wrong-way crash on I-290 in Worcester

WORCESTER — The driver of a Honda Accord that was going the wrong way on Interstate 290 was killed Sunday night when the car collided with an oncoming vehicle, according to state police.

Moments earlier, the car was headed in the correct direction, east, when the driver somehow lost control and slammed into the concrete barrier along the inside lanes. The driver regained control of the car and, for reasons unclear, began driving in the wrong direction, according to state police.

A head-on crash occurred moments later.

The crash, shortly before 9 p.m. near the Belmont Street overpass, remains under investigation. Traffic was backed up for hours after the crash. Vehicles were detoured off the highway.

The 24-year-old Worcester man driving the second vehicle, a Toyota Highlander sport utility vehicle, was treated for minor injuries at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, state police said.

The 31-year-old Marlborough man driving the wrong-way vehicle was declared dead at the scene, state police said. The initial crash involving the Honda occurred near the Burncoat Street interchange.

Authorities have not released the identity of the drivers.
