Services for Msgr. David Fierro, who died of COVID-19, set for Wednesday

Msgr. David Fierro, 71, a retired priest in the El Paso Diocese, died of complications of COVID-19 Nov. 25.

Fierro, a native of Alpine, Texas, began his religious formation at St. Charles Seminary in El Paso and completed his priestly studies for major seminary at the Josephinum Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. He was ordained by Bishop Sidney Metzger on June 19, 1976, according to a Catholic Diocese of El Paso press release.

In his 45 years of priesthood, Fierro served as Chancellor of the Diocese of El Paso, rector of St. Patrick Cathedral, rector of St. Charles Seminary, Vocations Director, and pastor of many parishes around the Dis of Santa Rosa de Lima, Mother Cabrini, St. Matthew and Our Lady of the Light.

Msgr. Fierro retired from active ministry in June 2021.

The vigil service will be Wednesday at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 400 W. Sunset Rd. Public visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. A Liturgy of the Word service will be at 7 p.m.

The Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, at St. Patrick Cathedral, 1118 N. Mesa. His remains will then be transported to his final resting place in Alpine, where a memorial mass will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3 at Our Lady of Peace Parish, 406 S. 6th St., Alpine.

There will be a visitation from 11 a.m. to noon before the mass. A Committal Service will follow the memorial mass in Alpine, Texas.

Fierro is survived by his brother-in-law Manuel T. Hernandez; several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, David H. Fierro, his mother, Elodia Gallego Fierro, siblings David H. Fierro Jr., Fred G. Fierro and Evangelina Hernandez, and niece Norma Jean Hernandez.

In place of flowers, Fierro's wishes were that donations be made to St. Charles Seminary and Fr. Yermo School.
