Greetings friends!

Like many of you, I'm spending most of this week preparing for Christmas, so I'll keep this one somewhat brief.

First, I always like cheering on Rochester's contestants on Food Network shows.

The latest: Phillip Tomasso, who owns Something Delicious Bake Shop with his wife, Stephanie, will appear on a Guy Fieri-hosted reality show in which contestants compete for the chance to open a Chicken Guy! franchise. "Guy’s Chance of a Lifetime" will premier on Discovery+ on Dec. 26, and on Food Network on Jan. 2. More details here.

Here's a fun fact, even though this isn't about me: I met Guy Fieri back in 2007, before I was a journalist. My older son and I were finalists in the kids in the kitchen category of the National Beef Cookoff in Chicago, and Guy Fieri was host. (Our recipe was Greek meatball subs, which I think were tasty but didn't win us any money.)

I can tell you honestly that the larger-than-life personality you see on TV is exactly how he is in real life — even early in the morning. He was especially friendly and engaging with the kids who participated, so that makes him an OK guy in my book.

I do have one beef with him: his show, "Diners Drive-Ins and Dives," still has not come to Rochester, and I think we'd have a lot of good places for him to visit. What dish would you suggest for the show? Send me your ideas and if I get enough good suggestions, I'll make it a story.

Christmas info

• If you tend to be a person tends to make last-minute trips to the store (I'm right there with you), know that Wegmans will be closed on Christmas Day, but other stores will be open. Marcia Greenwood has the details.

• Looking for some new Christmas cookie recipes to try? I can vouch for these five recipes, past winners of the Holidays at the Market cookie competition, which I judged for five years. The ginger pecan cookies, shown above, are on my own baking list for this year.

• Looking for some new cocktail recipes to enhance holiday entertaining? These three tasty recipes were created by home mixologists.

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it! See you next week.
