In desperate need of frontcourt help for 2023-24, Seton Hall basketball began stocking up Wednesday with the commitment of 6-foot-8 high school senior David Tubek. Here are three things to know about him.

1. He decommitted from Memphis.

After committing to Memphis in the fall, Tubek saw an opportunity for more playing time at the Hall as Memphis coach Penny Hardaway loaded up on a seven-man 2023 recruiting class featuring four forwards, including the recent addition of Temple transfer Nick Jourdain. Tubek played for the NJ Scholars AAU program, whose coaches have longstanding ties to Shaheen Holloway and assistant Rasheen Davis. Among his original suitors were Arizona State, Pitt and Creighton. He currently attends Dream City Christian High School in Arizona.

2. He’s relatively new to basketball.

Hailing from the South Sudan, Tubek only began playing organized basketball in 2019. Although lightly regarded by the national scouting services (he’s rated two stars by 247 Sports with a composite Class of 2023 ranking of 263), the belief is that the raw material is there and he’s still growing into his body. He’s 210 pounds right now and that should change with a serious weight-room regimen.

3. He’s a combo forward.

The staff’s belief is that Tubek can play either forward position; he shoots it well enough to play small forward but rebounds aggressively and brings enough physicality to hold it down at power forward. He’s also viewed as coachable – an important trait as Holloway continues to put his imprint on the program as the page turns to year two of his regime. Obviously the Pirates have a long way to go in terms of filling out their frontcourt with standout forward/center Tyrese Samuel having entered the transfer portal. This is a start.

Here’s a look at Seton Hall’s current scholarship depth chart for 2023-24, subject to change:

Guards: Kadary Richmond, Al-Amir Dawes, Femi Odukale, Jaquan Sanders, JaQuan Harris, Isaiah Watts.

Wings: Dre Davis.

Bigs: Tae Davis, David Tubek.
