Compared to many cities of our size, downtown Cincinnati does not have a major homelessness or panhandling problem. But what we do have are complex feelings over whether or not our unhoused neighbors on the streets are dangerous.

I'm Sydney Franklin and yes, I'm a real estate reporter. Yet I don't just write about people creating housing or other developments. I believe Downtown's success also has a lot to do with how well we take care of those who are most vulnerable.

That's why, for our Future of Downtown series, I dug into the deeper issues plaguing our homeless and panhandling populations. The more obvious ones: mental health and substance abuse. Lesser known: Not all people begging for money are actually homeless.

So to set the record straight, I found out exactly which groups are committed to helping our neighbors in need, what solutions exist and what statistics say about their safety versus ours.
