The Seven Best Food Moments From 'Friends'—And Recipes to Go With Them

Stacey Ballis

Whether you were an original fan of 'Friends' who has been literally twisting in the wind since the series left Netflix last year (we know, we were on a break), or you’re someone who missed it the first time around and is just discovering its pleasures (and also has been twisting in the wind since the series left Netflix last year), two things are true.

One: All 10 seasons of 'Friends' will return in triumph on May 27th to the new streaming platform HBO Max.

Two: It’s time for the One With All the Food.

Food and 'Friends'

'Friends' always used food to great comedic value throughout the series. From Monica dancing with a turkey on her head, to food fights where Phoebe gets “hummused,” to Chandler’s Thanksgiving neuroses (More turkey, Mister Chandler?), to Joey’s obsession with eating (‘Cause I’m a Tribbianni. And this is what we do!), food is funny on 'Friends' and almost another character in the show. Monica is a chef, they all hang out at a coffeehouse… eating and drinking is a natural part of the life.

So let’s prepare for the return of one of the great all-time bingeable shows with some recipes that celebrate the best food moments of 'Friends.'

The One With All The Cheesecakes

When cheesecakes for a neighbor keep accidentally getting delivered to Chandler and Joey, not only do Chandler and Rachel eat the cheesecakes, which they think are the best they have ever tasted, but they eventually steal the one that is finally delivered to the right address. When the cheesecake falls to the floor in a scuffle, they literally eat it off the floor. Want to make a great one for yourself? Try this Cheesecake Factory style cheesecake. And where you eat it is up to you—no judgment!

The One With All the Jam

We’ve all done some serious cooking when getting over a breakup, and if you are a chef, you are likely to go down a kitchen rabbit hole to mend your broken heart. Monica breaks up with Richard and starts making jam like she is her own personal Smucker’s factory, much to the delight of Joey, who can eat a whole jar with a spoon. Want to make a rational batch of homemade jam? Try this small-batch jam.

The One With the Dozen Lasagnas

If you are going to make a dozen lasagnas for someone, you might want to ascertain beforehand whether or not they are vegetarian, or you are going to have to find homes for a lot of lasagnas! Need some lasagna in your life? This classic meat lasagna should fill the need, but I’d only make one at a time.

The One With Phoebe’s Cookie Recipe

Chocolate chip cookies are always a good idea, but when Phoebe enlists Monica to help her recreate her great grandmother’s secret recipe, it turns out the secret is right on the bag of chips. Phoebe might have been sad to discover that her ancestor Nestlé Toulouse was actually Nestle Tollhouse, but there are worse things than a traditional chocolate chip cookie. Try this upgraded chocolate chunk one.

The One With Ross’s Sandwich

One of the best food memes to come out of 'Friends' (and that's saying something) was the invention of “the moist-maker." In making a post-Thanksgiving sandwich, Ross and Monica take an extra slice of bread, soak it in leftover gravy, and put it in the middle of the sandwich, to bring extra flavor and moistness to the sandwich. And anyone who has ever tried it knows it is a seriously genius addition. You don’t have to wait for Thanksgiving to indulge, though: Our guide to gravy means a moist-maker is mere moments away from your next sandwich!

The One With the Trifle

Possibly the most famous (and hilarious) food moment on 'Friends' was a Thanksgiving episode when Rachel attempts to make a traditional English trifle for dessert, but the cookbook she is using has the pages stuck together, so she makes a dish that is half trifle, and half the Shepherd’s pie recipe that is stuck to the back. So, cake, custard, fruit, ground beef, peas… Ross declares that it tastes like feet, and Joey, of course, loves it. We recommend you make this Shepherd’s Pie and this Trifle and eat them contiguously, not concurrently.
