Seven children taken to hospital following hazmat incident at Cape YMCA

Fire crews responded to the YMCA Cape Cod in West Barnstable, Friday, for an incident involving hazardous materials that sent seven children to the hospital.

“We found seven children in respiratory distress who had been exposed to vapors from muriatic acid,” West Barnstable Fire Chief Joseph Maruca said in a release issued by the department.

The seven children were taken by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital to be evaluated. No word on their conditions at this time.

Firefighters responded to the YMCA shortly after 2:30 p.m. for a call for a “hazmat spill” according Chief Maruca.

“A State Hazmat team responded to support West Barnstable FD and other agencies with an accidental mixture of pool chemicals,” according to spokesperson for the State Fire Marshal’s office.

West Barnstable firefighters along with the State Hazmat Team ventilated the building, which is now safe for entry according to West Barnstable Fire.

All parents of the children taken to the hospital have been notified, according to a statement posted to the YMCA Cape Cod Facebook page.

Barnstable Police and the Massachusetts State Police are investigating the incident, according to the West Barnstable Fire Department.
