Seven Decades of the Swedish and Norwegian Royal Families Hanging Out with Nobel Prize Laureates

The Nobel Prizes have been awarded on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death, since 1901. As Nobel stipulated in his will, the Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, and Literature are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, while the Nobel Peace Prize is given in Oslo, Norway.

For just as long, the royal families have been involved in the ceremonies (and notably, until 1905, Norway and Sweden shared a common king). Today, the Prize in Oslo is awarded in the presence of the monarch; in Stockholm, the reigning king hands them to the laureates himself. Of course, a royal dynasty is larger than its patriarch-and the whole royal family plays a role in the event.
