12 hospitalized, including children, after three-car crash in Davie

Twelve people were hospitalized after a three-car crash on Interstate 75 in Davie on Saturday, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened shortly after 5 p.m. in the northbound lanes, north of Sheridan Street, Lt. Indiana Miranda, a spokesperson for FHP, said in an email Monday.

The driver of a yellow Acura was heading north in the right merge lane, beginning to merge into the outside lane when he swiped the side of a white Ford van, sending the van rotating until colliding with a pole, Miranda said. The Acura driver continued north until crashing into a second car, a black Chevy.

Davie Fire Rescue initially transported seven patients with significant injuries to Memorial Regional Hospital, Jorge Gonzalez, the Assistant Fire Chief of the Davie Fire Department, said. On Sunday afternoon, Memorial Healthcare System confirmed that they received 12 transfers.

“Nine adult and three pediatric patients — all generally in stable condition,” Kerting Baldwin, Administrative Director of Corporate Communications, said.

Baldwin did not immediately return voicemails and an email seeking an update on their conditions Monday afternoon. Miranda said Monday that the 12 patients’ injuries were not life threatening.

All northbound lanes of the highway were shut down about 5:30 p.m. Saturday and cleared shortly after, according to FL 511, the alert system run by the Florida Department of Transportation.
