Seven new members were inducted into the Lancaster Athletic Wall of Honor

LANCASTER – Seven new members were inducted into the Lancaster High School Gary Mauller Athletic Wall of Honor on Friday.

The induction ceremony took place last Friday before the boys’ varsity basketball game against Reynoldsburg.

The honorees, who were invited to tour the high school on the day of their induction took part in a question-and-answer session in the high school theater, as well as an informal social gathering in the cafeteria before last Friday’s game.

The Lancaster High School Touchdown Club reserved the Eagles Lodge for a social gathering after the basketball game.

The Wall of Honor is named after Gary Mauller, who was an educator in the Lancaster City Schools for 47 years, serving as athletic director from 1989 to 1996. He always believed it was important to honor tradition and recognize outstanding efforts by Lancaster athletes.

Mauller began hanging pictures on the wall of the hallway during his tenure as athletic director. Upon Mauller’s passing in April of 2017, donations were made in his memory have made it possible to continue his mission of recognizing Lancaster High School’s athletic tradition.

This year’s seven inductees are:

William “Billy” Burke - Class of 1995: Football - 2-time All-Ohio, 2-time captain, 3-year starter, 3-time 1st Team All-league, 2-time Conference Defensive Player of the Year, 2-time Southeast District Player of the Year, Agonis Club of Columbus Lineman of the Year, All-time leading tackler at LHS with 403 tackles.

University of Akron Football - 2-year starter, Special Mention Academic All-MAC. Coaching - Patriot Athletic Conference Football Coach of the Year 2009, Cleveland Plain Dealer Medina County Football Coach of the Year 2009, Patriot Athletic Conference Track & Field Coach of the Year 2009.

Steve Poston - Class of 1993: Football - All-Ohio 1991 and 1992, Buckeye Central Conference Defensive Player of the Year 1991 and 1992, the school record holder for career interceptions (21), averaged 30 yards per kick-off return and 10 yards per punt return.

Basketball - 2-year letter winner in basketball, recipient of the Terry Webb Award. Started teaching for the Lancaster City Schools in 1997 and was named principal of Thomas Ewing Junior High School in 2008.

Jack Greathouse - Boys Basketball Coach 1988-2003: Most coaching wins in Lancaster High School basketball history (224), inducted into the District 11 Hall of Fame 2009, Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2010, Mid-Ohio Valley Hall of Fame 2017 and Ohio Capital Conference Hall of Fame 2017.

Division I Final Four 1991, Regional Runners-up 2003 (23-win season), Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association and AP Southeastern Coach of the Year 2003, 5-time Central District Coach of the Year, selected to coach in the Ohio North/South, Ohio/Kentucky and Ohio/West Virginia All-Star games.  Coached Team Reebok in Milan, Italy.  Total career wins 333. Assistant Principal at LHS 2006-2008, Principal 2009-2017.

Erica Campbell Goss - Class of 2016: 4-time 1st Team All-OCC in Girls Soccer and Track & Field.  2nd Team All-District Soccer 2014, 3rd Team All-District Soccer 2013 and 2015.  Lancaster Eagle-Gazette Soccer Player of the Year 2015.  LHS All-time leader for Career Goals Scored (70).  Earned 11 Varsity letters at LHS. Heidelberg University Soccer - Led team in goals scored and assists all four years (38 goals, 15 assists), 1st Team Academic All-Ohio, 2nd Team All-Conference, 2-time 3rd Team All-Ohio, Named to the Heidelberg Women’s Soccer All-Decade Team.

Bryan Bowdish - Class of 1997: Football - Team Captain 1995 & 1996, averaged 12.1 yards/catch and scored 15 career touchdowns.  Averaged 34.5 yards/kickoff return (1 TD) and 4.6 yards/carry (8 TD), 1st Team All-Central District, selected to play in the Ohio North/South All-Star Game.

Basketball - Team Captain 1996-97, 195 career assists and 104 career steals.  Led his team in assists and steals for 3 years, 1st Team All-Central District. United States Military Academy at West Point Football - Team Captain 2000, averaged 12.1 yards/catch. Recipient of the General Creighton Abrams Memorial Award for Leadership, and Army Football Ranger Award for Leadership. 2001 Graduate United States Military Academy at West Point, commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant. Two combat tours in Iraq (2003, 2005). Bronze Star Medal.

Alysha Gossel Curry - Class of 2003: Member of 2002 & 2003 OCC Champion Track & Field teams and 2003 Central District Champion team. 2002 State qualifier and 2003 Ohio State Pole Vault Champion. Set the State pole vault record in 2003 (11’3”) and set the 2003 State meet record (11’2”) as well as the 2-person (with Rachael Diehl) relay state record (21’0”).

Otterbein University - ESPN Academic All-District, 5-time Ohio Athletic Conference Pole Vault Champion (3 times indoor and 2 times outdoor), set and broke the Otterbein school record in pole vault 6 times (12’), 3-time All-conference, 3-time Indoor/Outdoor NCAA National qualifier, 2006 NCAA Indoor Track & Field All-American.

Greg Cave - Class of 1991: Basketball - All-Ohio 2nd Team UPI and AP 1991, Buckeye Central Conference player of the Year 1991, District 11 Player of the Year 1991, Ohio High School Coaches Association Player of the Year 1991, 2-time 1st Team All-Conference 1989-90 and 1990-91, 2nd Team All-Conference 2988-89, three-year Varsity letter winner, member of the 1991 LHS State Final Four team. Received Division I basketball scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, averaging 10 points and 6 rebounds.
