Calling all tricksters, fiends and friendly ghouls. It's time to rejoice with Halloween right around the weekend corner.

Whether you like to celebrate big or small, these weekend events are sure to keep you in the spirit of the upcoming holiday.

Here are seven things to do this weekend in Johnson County.

John Waters presents 'The End of the World' at the Englert Theatre

Filmmaker, writer, actor and artist John Waters is bringing his signature brand of boundary-pushing thinking to the Englert Theatre Sunday.

On the eve of Halloween, the filmmaker behind “Pink Flamingos,” “Cry-Baby” and “Hairspray” will present his 70-minute spoken word show “The End of the World.”

It’s the latest iteration of his one-man show most recently titled “False Negative.”

“It's certainly about Halloween, about how everything looks so terrible. It starts in despair and ends in optimism like everything I do,” the filmmaker told the Press-Citizen.

It’s a look at how the world seems like its falling apart and how people are going to “seize it” and make it better, Waters said.

Waters’ career has spanned decades, presenting films that delve into fetishism and violence and has gained a cult following.

“I believe, weirdly, I am politically correct. I've never been canceled. I say really ludicrous stuff on all sides of offensive humor,” he said. “But I think it's ‘cause I make fun of myself first and I make fun of things I love, not hate. And I'm not a separatist. I don't think you make the enemy feel stupid. That's not how you win. You make ‘em laugh and then they’ll listen.”

Earlier this month, Deadline announced that Waters would be returning to the director’s chair for an adaptation of his novel “Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance.”

As the storyteller comes to a UNESCO City of Literature, Waters reflected on the writing process, saying that there’s no shortcut to writing and that if anything is going to get good, you have to rewrite it.

“You have to want to communicate something to the next person that maybe you feel that only you can tell them in a way that will get their attention and make them look at things in a different way,” he said. “That’s what all art is.”

Bawdy Bawdy Ha Ha at the James Theater

Burlesque with a spooky twist.

That’s what the performers with Bawdy Bawdy Ha Ha have in store for their upcoming performance “Trick of Tease: An Out of Bawdy Burlesque Experience” at the James Theater Saturday evening.

Bawdy Bawdy Ha Ha brings the best of Midwest burlesque to the Iowa City area, according to their website.
