Seven teams, five individuals from the Panhandle qualify for state cross country meet

To say the Texas Panhandle will be well represented at the Class 2A and 4A state cross country meets would be an understatement.

The 2A and 4A regional was held Monday at Mae Simmons Park and it was a resounding success for the Panhandle. Seven teams and five individuals will be advance to the state meet on November 4th and 5th in Round Rock.

The Panhandle actually boasts the top teams for 4A boys and girls this year. The Dumas girls finished in first place as a team with a collective score of 63, while the Canyon boys are regional champs with a score of 24 – 47 points better than second place Big Spring.

Dumas finished four points ahead of second place Randall, who will also be going to state with a score of 67. The girls of Canyon will be going to Round Rock too after they compiled a score of 74. The Lady Eagles had the two fastest runners at Regionals in first place Avery Brown (11:43.10) and Abree Winfrey (11:57.40).

Other top Panhandle finishers for the top three squads were Randall's Sierra Sanchez (fourth place,12:07.40), Hailey Roberson (fifth place, 12:10.80) and Sadie Sanchez (eighth place, 12:21.10) along with Dumas' Sarai Chavez (sixth place, 12:15.50), Mia Lujan (ninth place, 12:23.40) and Yahaira Lujan (10th place, 12:25.90).

The Canyon boys had three runners in the top five and another two in the top ten. Alex Niemiec was the top performer as he finished in second place with a time of 15:37.60. Niemiec's teammate Lewter Lathan was right behind him in third with a time of 15:43 and Triston Cano was right after that in fourth at 15:44.20. Ryan Fernandez (seventh, 16:22.50) and Anthony Stuart (eighth, 16:11.60) rounded out the Eagle onslaught.

Joining the Canyon team will be Hereford's Angel Garcia, who took 16th place overall with a time of 16:59.70.

It wasn't just the 4A show, though.

The Gruver girls finished in second place with 130 points behind Christoval (85 points). Panhandle finished just behind the Greyhounds in third with 132 points and will also be heading to Round Rock.

The top individual performer from the Panhandle, however, didn't come from either of those schools. Farwell's Isabella Jaime took home second place overall with a time of 12:41.20 and will be making her way to state as well. Joining her as an individual will be Bovina's Faith Gonzalez, who took 16th place with a time of 13:25.50.

Gruver's Brenna Butler finished in fifth place with a time of 12:59.10.

Lastly, the Booker Kiowas will be sending their boys team to state after they finished regionals in fourth with a score of 166. Adrian Rosales was the top Booker performer as he finished in sixth place with a time of 17:40.

The top Panhandle performer individually in the 2A race was Ryder Robinson of Memphis, who ended up in fifth with a time of 17:27.90. He'll be heading to state alongside Nick Martinez of Gruver, who finished in 13th place with a time of 18:10.
