Seven of the top spots for sledding, tubing, skiing, more winter fun in the Columbus area

As temperatures begin to drop and snow begins to fall, Columbus-area families are on the lookout for places to go for some outdoor fun this winter.

Over the years, The Dispatch and its sister publications have offered readers some of the best and most popular places in central Ohio to go sledding, tubing, skiing and snowboarding, and to take part in other outdoor activities. From Goodale and Whitehall community parks to Alum Creek and Delaware state parks, there are plenty of places to consider.

But there are just some reader favorites that keep popping up in visitors guides, online message boards and other sources. Here's a list of seven of the best and most popular sites in the region.

Clinton-Como Park

301 W. Pacemont Rd., Clintonville

The long and not-so-steep hill is great for kids. It's located on the southern half of this 21-acre park at the west end of Weber Road, Clintonville. Be forewarned, though, parking is limited.

Olentangy River Parklands

600 W. Wilson Bridge Rd., Worthington

If you're looking for a mixture of beginner and moderate hills, as well as a more difficult drop, Olentangy River Parklands in Worthington has all three. Hay bales also offer protection from various obstacles. Parking is limited, and restrooms are available.

Whetstone Park of Roses

3901 N. High St., Clintonville

While there are two designated sledding hills, there are many of other hilly spots that will do just fine. They're located within the 13-acre park at the west end of Hollenback Road. There's plenty of parking, and restrooms are available. The Whetstone Community Center and library branch are also nearby and open during the day.

Blacklick Woods Metro Park

6975 E. Livingston Ave., Reynoldsburg

This moderate hill is on the golf course and offers a good time for anyone looking for some fun. Parking and restrooms also are available.

Sharon Woods Metro Park

6911 Cleveland Ave., Westerville

Located across from Mount Carmel St. Ann's in Westerville, this park features two hills, just north of the main entrance: a "bunny hill" for young children and a longer, not-so-steep hill for sledders and snowboarders. Restrooms and parking also are available.

Schiller Park

1069 Jaeger St., German Village

This second-oldest park in Columbus features a small but somewhat steep hill for kids behind the playground. When you're done, there's always something to do right there in German Village. Parking is available, both in the lot and on the street, though depending on when you visit, you might have to walk a bit.

Antrim Park

The hill at this 123-acre park close to Clintonville and Worthington is small and easy to climb, which can be good for young children but also for parents who aren't looking forward to a long trip back up.
