Pittsburgh police said a landscaping dump truck was stolen from the 4900 block of Rosetta Street. Employees saw a male get into the truck and speed away.
Workers followed the stolen vehicle in a red pickup truck.
Matt Tryc, a sous chef at Spork, said he was outside when the trucks came down the wrong way on S. Graham.
“The chef and I, we were just sitting right here on the stoop,” Tryc said. “We were discussing menu stuff and I heard a big commotion up that way and two trucks came flying down the road here.”
The dump truck struck as many as four vehicles along Centre Avenue. Officers did not pursue the driver out of concern for the safety of the public.
Camille Kimmich was working at Sherwin-Williams when she saw all the chaos from her store window around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
“I looked outside and I saw a white truck fly in between two cars parked here up into the churchyard and it flew and just kept going,” Kimmich said. “I walked outside and all these cars were smashed up.”
Before the driver in the stolen truck slammed into several parked cars along Centre, Kimmich said she saw it hit another car in the Shadyside Shops plaza.
“He came into the Panera parking lot, went around the Panera parking lot, hit a bunch of cars in there and came out,” she said.
Kimmich said it all happened so fast.
“It was probably the craziest thing I’ve ever seen,” she said. “I’m just happy everybody’s safe because it could’ve been a lot worse.”
At least three cars that were hit were towed away.
The suspect fled on foot, and officers found the dump truck a short distance away from the damaged vehicles. One woman was treated for minor injuries at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing.
