Several Corpus Christi-area coaches honored by Texas High School Coaches Association

Four football coaches in the Coastal Bend were honored Wednesday by the Texas High School Coaches Association as regional coaches of the year.

Veterans Memorial head coach Ben Bitner and Refugio head coach Jason Herring were named coaches of the year in Region 7, with Bitner garnering the honor in Class 5A and Herring in Class 2A.

Herring led the Bobcats to an appearance in the Class 2A Division I state championship game and a runner-up finish.

Bitner guided the Eagles to their second Region IV-5A Division I title and subsequent trip to the state semifinals.

Veterans Memorial's veteran assistant Lanny Wilson was chosen as the Region 7 Assistant Coach of the Year in Class 5A after guiding the Eagles defense.

Wilson was joined by Taft offensive coordinator Joe Rios, selected as the Class 3A Assistant coach of the Year for Region 7, as he was instrumental in the Greyhounds first outright district championship since 1986 and first trip to the third round of the playoffs since 1982.

In volleyball, Skidmore-Tynan head coach Holly Vasquez was the Class 2A Region 7 Coach of the Year.
