Several Dearborn businesses close Monday as part of global strike to support of Palestine
More than 20 businesses in Dearborn and surrounding areas shut their doors Monday to support Palestine and demand an immediate ceasefire amid ongoing conflicts as part of a global strike.
According to a recent Instagram post from TCD News, the strike calls for global solidarity and peace following “the devastating impact in Gaza, where nearly 18,000 people have lost their lives, predominantly women and children.”
Some participating businesses vocal about the strike on social media included Qahwah House, Gateaux Patisserie, Haraz Coffee House and IceBurg Dearborn.
According to an Instagram post from Qahwah House, the Yemeni coffee shop closed all ten locations as an act of solidarity with the global strike in support of Palestine. The Dearborn-based company also commented on the post, saying they hadn’t closed their doors in six years before this.
Gateaux Patisserie also announced its closure for the day on Instagram. The post contained a detailed graphic reading “Global Strike for Palestine” with a caption saying the company stands with “our Palestinian brothers and sisters.” Haraz Cofee House announced closures at all locations nationally, ranging from Michigan to Kentucky to Texas to California.

IceBurg Dearborn, which announced its closure over Instagram, further elaborated on their decision-making in a direct message from the general manager to the Detroit Free Press via the social media platform.
"We decided to close our restaurant today participating in the global strike in solidarity. This movement stands against the open genocide in Gaza, the ethnic cleansing and the colonial settlement in the West Bank," IceBurg's general manager wrote. "We stand together with intentions of calling a ceasefire and putting these innocent Palestinians suffering to an end. As a Palestinian-owned business, we are praying for nothing but peace overseas."
