After several delays, will Raising Cane's finally reveal Glassboro plans?

GLASSBORO — Raising Cane’s Restaurants’ proposal to add its menu of chicken eats to the string of fast-food operations along North Delsea Drive finally appears ready to go public at a hearing next week.

The chain best known for its chicken fingers started looking at the area more than a year ago, specifically at a closed Rite Aid pharmacy that rubs shoulders with a Wendy’s. The two restaurants actually would share access to Donald Barger Boulevard and Delsea Drive.

Raising Cane’s proposes razing the pharmacy and building a 3,321-square-foot restaurant. The idea was set for a Planning Board review three times in late 2023. It now is to be heard on Monday, Jan. 8.

The dimensions of the pharmacy property offer some design challenges that require the board granting some waivers. The chain also is asking for leeway to exceed restrictions on signs.

The new restaurant would be smaller than the current pharmacy, built in 1995 on a 1.58-acre corner lot at 695 N. Delsea Drive. Like most new fast-food restaurants, the design calls for double drive-thru pickup lanes and a bypass vehicle lane.

The property, at the corner of Donald Barger Boulevard, is under consideration as a site for a Raising Cane's chicken restaurant. The idea was discussed at a work committee meeting of the Glassboro Zoning Board in January 2023. So far, a site plan is not submitted. PHOTO: March 21, 2023.

The area is part of a highway business zone. Chick-fil-A in early 2023 was approved to open close by in a section of property formerly occupied by a bowling alley, but that chain has not started construction. A nearby Burger King also was torn down and rebuilt.
