UPDATE: More than a dozen children taken to hospital after Accomack school bus crash

UPDATE at noon: Virginia State Police increased the number of people taken to the hospital in the Accomack school bus crash Wednesday.

At noon, police said 14 children (ages 5-10 years old) were transported to the hospital, all with non-life threatening injuries. The school bus driver, Robert S. Walker, faces charges of reckless driving/failing to maintain proper control.

UPDATE at 11:30 a.m.: Seven children were taken to the hospital after a school bus crash in Accomack County, police said.

A preliminary investigation by Virginia State Police found the bus was traveling north Pungoteague Road when the driver experienced a medical emergency, causing the vehicle to run off the roadway, into a ditch and strike a power/electrical pole.

Of the 25 children on board, seven (ages 5 to 10 years old) were transported to the local hospital, police said. The bus driver, 66-year-old Onancock man, was transported from the scene.

The bus was transporting the children to Pungoteague Elementary School. The road remained closed as of about 11:30 a.m., and VDOT had established detours.

Virginia State Police were on the scene of a crash involving a school bus in Accomack County on Wednesday morning in which there were several reports of injuries.

The crash occurred on Pungoteague Road just north of Boggs Road, in the Pungoteague area of Accomack County.

There were children on board at the time of the crash, police said. There were several reports of injuries, but as of about 9 a.m., the extent of those injuries was unknown, police said.

"An unfortunate incident occurred this morning with one of our school buses which is currently under investigation," W. C. Holland, superintendent of Accomack County Public Schools, said in a morning news release. "My primary concern is for the safety and well-being of our students and staff. The situation is still fluid."
