Several injured when NYPD patrol vehicle hits pedestrians in Bronx

A New York City Police Department patrol vehicle struck several pedestrians Thursday afternoon in the Bronx following a collision, authorities said. Ten people, including two children, were injured. The crash occurred at about 3:10 p.m. local time as a marked patrol vehicle carrying two officers and with its lights and sirens on was responding to a report of a stolen car, NYPD Chief of Patrol Jeffrey Maddrey said in a news briefing Thursday evening.

The police vehicle collided with a civilian vehicle at an intersection. "The officers crossed over the double yellow line to go around the vehicle, but the vehicle made a left-hand turn, at which point the department vehicle and the civilian vehicle, they clipped each other," Maddrey said. The impact sent the police vehicle over the curb and onto a sidewalk, where it struck a group of about six people, Maddrey said.

CBS New York obtained video of the incident.  In total, 10 people, including the two officers, were injured and transported to hospitals, according to Maddrey and the New York City Fire Department. A 5-year-old who was standing on the sidewalk and a 2-year-old who was in the civilian car were among the injured, Maddrey said. The oldest victim was 65-years-old.

The five-year-old's mother and grandmother were also hurt, CBS New York reported.   Some of the victims suffered serious injuries, the station said, but everyone was expected to survive.

According to Maddrey, the suspect in the car that was reported stolen escaped, and there was no police pursuit.

"Unfortunately, the accident allowed the person to steal the vehicle," Maddrey said. "So we didn't even catch the person who we were trying to get."

The NYPD has launched an investigation into the crash.
