Several more inches of snow forecast for Anchorage, making for slick roadways

Feb. 4—Update, 9 a.m. Saturday: Several more inches of snow was forecast for the Anchorage area through Saturday morning into the afternoon, making for slick roadways and blowing snow.

The National Weather Service was calling for 2 to 4 inches of snow across the area, tapering off by early afternoon, with as much as 5 inches in some areas. Snow was falling across much of the region on Saturday.

"Moderate to localized heavy snow is expected to continue across the Anchorage Bowl this morning," the weather service wrote. "This will make for difficult travel conditions due to limited visibility and resuspension of snow by vehicles on roadways. The snow is expected to taper off during the late morning and early afternoon hours."

Earlier story:

Anchorage police logged more than two dozen vehicle collisions by Friday afternoon as a coating of light snow made for slick driving conditions prior to the evening commute.

Six of the collisions involved injuries, according to police spokeswoman Cherie Zajdzinski. Police were contacted about another 31 vehicles in distress, she said.

Drivers on social media noted slick roadways and some blowing snow in Anchorage and along the Glenn and Seward highways.

Snow began moving into the Anchorage Bowl on Wednesday, dropping 2 inches of snow near Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, said National Weather Service meteorologist Christian Landry. Just over 2 inches of snow fell on Thursday and on Friday an inch fell from about 9 a.m. until midafternoon, Landry said. Totals appeared relatively consistent with slightly more in parts of East Anchorage and the Hillside, he said.

The snow paused Friday afternoon, but Landry said light snow was expected to resume in Anchorage on Friday evening, tapering off Saturday afternoon.
