Several Poway Schools Closed Due To Power Outages

POWAY, CA — Six schools were closed Thursday in Poway Unified School District due to public-safety power shutoffs prompted by fire weather conditions in San Diego County.

The following schools in the Poway Unified School District were closed due to power outages:

  • Abraxas High

  • Garden Elementary

  • Meadowbrook Middle

  • Painted Rock Elementary

  • Pomerado Elementary

  • Poway High

"The lack of power means our HVAC systems are not working, thus limiting ventilation in our classrooms," district spokeswoman Christine Paik said. "Adequate ventilation is a key component of our COVID-19 protocols, thus we have decided to close these schools for safety reasons."

If additional schools lose power, they will also have to be closed, she said.

Parents of students who were already on campus were asked to pick up their children. Parents of students who were not on campus were asked to not bring them to school.

"We realize that due to the lack of power, many families will have difficulties accessing the internet for assignments or virtual learning," Paik said. "Students may engage in any asynchronous, offline learning provided by their teacher."
