Several SAPD officers honored for service with awards

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — Several San Angelo Police Department officers have earned meritorious awards due to their bravery and service to the San Angelo community.

According to the SAPD, officers can earn meritorious awards by being nominated by their fellow officers. These nominations are then submitted to the nominated officer’s chain of command for review before being submitted to the “Meritorious Review Board,” which determines if the nominated officer’s actions meet the criteria for a meritorious award.

“Chief Frank Carter would like to acknowledge the heroism and extraordinary acts of bravery that were displayed by these officers for the 2023 year,” the SAPD said.

The following officers have earned a meritorious award for their extraordinary service during 2023:

  • Officers Mark Calvert, Danielle Crowder and Mike Morris received lifesaving awards for the heroic action taken in lifting a vehicle that a citizen was trapped under. Their quick response to the trapped individual ultimately saved their life.

  • Officer Delacruz was awarded the lifesaving award for disregarding his personal safety and administering aid to a citizen who was being attacked by a large swarm of bees. Medical personnel concluded that Delacruz’s action saved the victim’s life.

  • Lieutenant Adam Scott, Lieutenant Craig Thomason, Sergeant Brian Gesch, Officer Chris Herrington and Officer Rodney Mitchell all received the Police Commendation Bar for completing the challenging tasks of constructing a SIMMS house for the SAPD from the ground up. The SIMMS house is a non-ballistic shoot house that allows walls to be moved to create a variety of training environments that officers can utilize to improve their skills. According to the SAPD, “the craftsmanship and dedication demonstrated by these individuals are a direct reflection of what SAPD strives for.”

“We take great pride in our dedicated officers as they truly embody protecting and serving our community,” the SAPD said.
