Several staffing changes coming for Cheboygan Area Schools

CHEBOYGAN — On Monday, Cheboygan Area Schools Board of Education saw several changes in staffing for the district, with two resignations, two retirements and a new teacher hired.

"We do have two retirements this evening," said board president Amber Hansen. "Julie Wilkinson as a bus driver for the district for 32 years, and Doniel Bur, our elementary aide of 20 years."

The school board voted unanimously to accept the letters of resignation with regrets.

Two other staff members also recently turned in their letters of resignation. Chris Ackerman, a social studies teacher at Cheboygan Middle School, and Brittany Bade, a teacher at East Elementary School, turned in their letters to the school district's administration.

Ackerman has been a teacher with the school district for 19 years and Bade has taught at the elementary school for one year. These letters of resignation were also accepted with regrets by the school board. Both resignations are effective at the end of the school year.

"Congratulations on those very well earned retirements that we just had, and best of luck to the four employees that we will really, really miss here in the district," said Hansen.

Ackerman's position has been filled internally, as another teacher has moved into the middle school social studies position for the beginning of next school year.

"As a result, we have a fourth grade posting and a second grade posting," said Superintendent Paul Clark.

One new teacher was also hired at Monday's school board meeting. Macey Morse was hired as a special education teacher for Inverness Academy and she will begin with the district at the start of next school year.

Morse is a graduate of Cheboygan High School.

"We are glad to have another former student come back to join our staff. She was a very good student and I believe that she will be a very good teacher as well," said Clark. "She will begin in the fall."

Morse will be taking over the position of special education teacher at Inverness Academy, a position currently filled by Mark Dombroski, who has made the decision not to return to the district in the fall.

Dombroski came out of retirement to fill that position in 2021. He has served in many different positions with Cheboygan schools over the years, including a special education teacher and superintendent.
