Severe Storms Down Trees in Arkansas

Damage was reported in western Arkansas after severe thunderstorms hit the area early on Tuesday morning, May 4.

Storm chaser Jock Williams surveyed the damage in Fort Smith. The National Weather Service (NWS) said a 74 mph wind gust was reported at Fort Smith Regional Airport.

A severe thunderstorm watch had been in effect for western Arkansas until 4 am, warning of winds of 70 mph and localized flash flooding.

“Extensive damage” was reported at the Crawford County Courthouse in Van Buren, and several school districts in the area opted for remote learning on Tuesday. As of 1:20 pm on Tuesday, there were 32,000 power outages reported in the state. Credit: Jock Williams via Storyful
