Severe storms likely southeast of St. Louis Tuesday evening

ST. LOUIS — Record warmth is likely today. The current record high is 79, set in 1981. The forecast calls for temperatures to reach the mid-80s today. The St. Louis area has a shot at tying or breaking the all time record for February, which is 85.

The risk for storms in the immediate metropolitan St. Louis area is quite low. The better risk for storms and possible severe weather will be across the southern and eastern parts of the region. If we are to see thunderstorms in St. Louis, it will be between 8 p.m. and midnight. The chance for a couple of strong storms southeast and east of St. Louis will be in the 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. timeframe. The main threat will be isolated hail and damaging winds. However, there is a chance for a brief tornado or two between Perryville, Missouri and Mount Vernon, Illinois.

A major temperature drop will take place very rapidly overnight. Temperatures will fall from the 70s into the 30s in a very short period of time. Additional moisture and energy will lag the front back in the cold air and there is a chance for a quick burst of snow in our northwest counties between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. This will be well northwest of St. Louis. Some flurries may fall in the St. Louis area just before sunrise. There is no concern about road conditions, as temperatures will have been in the 70s only a few hours prior to the flurries.

On Wednesday, it will be windy and cold. Temperatures will stay in the 30s for most of the day. A noticeable change from the day before.
