Severe storms possible Wednesday afternoon in parts of Hartford County

Severe thunderstorms are possible in northern Connecticut late Wednesday afternoon, the National Weather Service says.

A severe thunder watch is in effect for Hartford and Tolland until 10 p.m.

The storms could produce damaging wind gusts and a tornado, and localized flooding is possible. The areas that may be affected are Hartford, Tolland and Windham counties.

“A cold front approaching southern New England late this afternoon will trigger a line of thunderstorms that could produce severe weather,” the service said in a 10:30 a.m. alert. “The line is expected to reach northwest Massachusetts around 3 p.m. - 4 p.m. and progress slowly eastward into northern and central Massachusetts and northern Connecticut this evening.”

The storms should weaken as they approach Rhode Island and eastern Massachusetts.
