Severe storms Wednesday in Mississippi; cold temperatures, freezing rain by the weekend

Severe weather and colder temperatures are in the forecast again as an arctic blast begins pushing into the Jackson area Wednesday afternoon.

The cold front brings a possibility of wind gusts, rain and hail around Jackson through Thursday. Possible freezing rain and wind are predicted for Hattiesburg and south on Friday, according to the National Weather Service's Jackson office.

"Get ready for active weather over the next few days, with big changes to come," the National Weather Service in Jackson posted on Twitter.

Weather forecast in Mississippi

Spring-like temperatures in the 70s on Wednesday are expected to drop to the 30s in Jackson and the 50s in Hattiesburg on Thursday, according to the weather service.

Thursday night into Friday morning, light freezing rain could occur in Hattiesburg and southern Mississippi, according to the weather service's prediction. Slick spots may develop, particularly on bridges and overpasses.

Last weekend, snow fell in parts of central and northern Mississippi, with Madison County seeing around 8 inches of snow. Snowfall was also reported as far south as Jones and Smith counties.
