Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Hampton Roads

Hampton Roads is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 8 p.m.

The National Weather Service in Wakefield issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and northeastern North Carolina until 8:15 p.m.

The weather service extended a severe thunderstorm warning for Hampton, Newport News and Poquoson until 7:45 p.m.

A storms are expected to bring heavy rainfall and gusty winds, the weather service said.

South Hampton Roads could see winds up to 30 miles per hour. Wind speed could be up to 50 miles per hour across the Peninsula, meteorologist Mike Rusnak said.

The storms are moving fairly quickly and could pass by 8:30 p.m., Rusnak said.

There is also a low chance for flooding, besides ponding of water where there is heavy rainfall.
