Severe weather hit Florida on Tuesday. Here is what we know about the situation in Marion County:

Tornado watch until 6 p.m. Tuesday

The National Weather Service has Marion County under a tornado watch until 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Florida State Guard activated

The Florida State Guard was activated Monday evening as the state prepared for severe weather.

"North Florida and South Georgia could see wind gusts approaching hurricane strength and a few strong tornadoes Tuesday as a powerful squall line is expected to sweep across the Southeast," the Tallahassee Democrat is reporting.

Severe weather expected in Florida

Because of the forecast, many school districts are closing on Tuesday and people are preparing for strong winds and rain.

Did Marion County close schools on Tuesday?

Yes. In a 5 p.m. Monday news release, the school district said schools will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 9.

College of Central Florida will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 9

All CF campuses, including the Appleton Museum of Art, will be closed on Tuesday. That includes all activities and online classes, as well.

"We plan to reopen Wednesday morning for classes and all business operations, weather permitting. Please continue to monitor the CF website (www.CF.edu), traditional media and social media for additional updates," the college said in a news release.
